Honor Your Body

Writer's picture: Stacey Smith Stacey Smith

When envisioning your personal yoga practice, what comes to mind? Do you find yourself comparing it to someone else's? Do you have expectations of what it should look like as opposed to what it should feel like? What if you came to the edge of your bed, your yoga mat or even a chair and just started movement based on what your body needs right now?

This is exactly what I have begun to do. I honor my body based on what it needs in the moment. I'm listening to my body, it's whispering or even shouting what it needs. Some days it needs rest even if my ego mind is saying go!

So next time just before you begin whatever practice you enjoy PAUSE and take just a few moments to connect the mind to the body and see if you can feel what you may need. Maybe a couple of seated stretches and neck rolls could do the trick. Or perhaps it's time to move to the floor, drawing your knees to your chest, or even incorporating standing stretches using a chair for leg swings and knee bends.

When you achieve harmony between your mind and body, your practice aligns more with what you truly need rather than simply what you desire it to be.
